How well do you know your fellow congregants? Do you feel like RUMC is your family? Sometimes we can get so caught up in our own lives, that we miss an opportunity to be a part of a community. For the next year or so we will be introducing you to each other through Member Spotlight! And we want to hear from you! Who do you want to learn more about! Send us your nominations and we’ll have you all knowing everyone in RUMC by next year!
The Wagners
Julia & Kevin (with Zack and Maddie)
HOW DID YOU MEET?
Kevin grew up in Evansville, Indiana. After graduating from Indiana University, he moved to Washington, DC to work in law enforcement. Julia grew up in Montgomery County, MD. She became a member of RUMC when her mother, Lynn Nulton served as a minister. In 2010, Julia was the maid of honor for her best friends wedding and Kevin was attending the same wedding as a guest of the groom. While they celebrated, mutual friends introduced them to one another. They hit it off immediately and eventually started dating. Now, Julia is a Registered Nurse on a Surgical Oncology unit at the National Institutes of Health. She recently finished working on her Wound, Ostomy and Continence certification. Kevin works for the Department of Defense.
ANY PETS?
Kevin and Julia have two black labs, Zack and Maddie. They were rescued from Lab Rescue LRCP, a local organization that the couple loves to support. Zack is 13 years old and very much a Mama’s boy. His interests include long walks, counter surfing and trying to break into the trashcan when no one is watching. Maddie is 5 and very much a Daddy’s girl. She loves chasing her ball, jumping in circles, which are lovingly called tilt-a-whirls and sprawling out, upside down in the grass. Both LOVE people, especially if they offer ear rubs or treats.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT ROCKVILLE?
The couple purchased their first home in Rockville 3 years ago. They love Rockville because they are close to all the things they love! They can enjoy restaurants, bowling, shopping and movies at Pike and Rose... or walk their dogs in Rock Creek Park. They enjoy spending time with nearby family and having easy access to all that the Washington, DC area has to offer. They especially enjoy supporting local businesses and trying new restaurants.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEAL TO SHARE TOGETHER?
Julia and Kevin love to cook together. One of their favorite things to do is bake a big piece of salmon with dijon mustard and lemon pepper. Then create a side dish with vegetables from their garden. They also love to throw a steak on the grill when they host friends. Dinnertime is their favorite time because they can chat about their days while working together in the kitchen.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE WAYS TO CELEBRATE FALL?
Julia and Kevin love spending time in their backyard, especially in the cool, fall weather. They enjoy building a fire in the fire pit and kickin back on the patio, or walking their dogs down to Rock Creek Park. Julia loves putting mums and pumpkins out on their front porch. This year, they hope to dress their black labs up in hilarious black spider costumes.
HOW DO SERVE THE CHURCH/COMMUNITY?
This summer, Kevin served as the activities leader for Vacation Bible School. Last year, the couple enjoyed participating with the Angel tree at Christmas time and hope to do the same this year. They love to support their community through the jobs that they do each day, which include health, research and public safety. They also enjoy contributing to Lab Rescue, LRCP. Lastly, they hope to contribute kindness within the community.
Their favorite things about the church are singing all the hymns and listening to Pastor Martha’s inspiring sermons, as she is such a good speaker.
ANYTHING FUN YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE CHURCH?
Kevin and Julia got married at Rockville United Methodist Church in June of last year. Their reception was at Pinstripes in Pike and Rose (Yes! There was bowling!). They enjoy attempting to grow vegetables in their backyard, especially hot peppers (even if they are often too hot to eat). Kevin likes to play the guitar in his spare time and Julia enjoys doing crafts. They recently enjoyed traveling to Spain and St. Lucia and hope to travel more in the future. They look forward to getting to know more members of the church community.
